I have been selected to compete in the Red Bull Foiling Generation World Series.
The Red Bull Foiling Generation is about providing talented young sailors, ages 16 - 20 with the opportunity to advance their careers through top-notch hydrofoil racing. The competition serves as a feeder program for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, which caters to competitors ages 19-25. Both competitions train youth sailors from all over the globe on smaller versions of catamaran racers with foils, like those used in one of the world’s most famous sailing competitions – the America’s Cup.
Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron will host this year's event from 21st - 25th February 2018. Sixteen teams of the most talented sailing youth from across the country have been chosen to participate in the Qualifier of the Red Bull Foiling Generation sailing competition. A Selection Committee in partnership with the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron evaluated possible competitors based on their sailing skills, athleticism and decision-making and I consider myself fortunate to have been chosen.
I am very excited about competing in these unique (and expensive) yachts and will be racing with George Angus, a friend I met at the International Foiling Camp. George is a great young sailor with a similar mindset to mine so it is sure to be interesting. We will all get the opportunity to do some pre-event training in these boats prior to the competition and the event will be run as a knock out series with four boats racing each other. The first two boats will advance to the next round until there is the final race where the first boat is the winner of the event.
The winning team of each national event goes on to compete against the other national winning teams.
Whilst there are many great sailors who have been chosen to compete, I am confident that George and I enter the competition on a level footing and look forward to this new and exciting challenge. As always, none of this would have been possible without the support of an ever increasing group of followers and I will always remain grateful for the opportunity that I have been given to follow my dream.
I look forward to updating you all on the next exciting chapter of My Journey.
